A slow computer is rarely "just old." It is usually one of a handful of specific problems, and you can check most of them yourself in under half an hour. Work through these in order.
1. Restart it properly
Not sleep — a full restart. Windows and macOS keep programs half-alive for weeks. If your machine has not truly rebooted in a while, do that first and see how it feels.
2. Check what is hogging the machine
On Windows press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager; on a Mac open Activity Monitor. Sort by CPU, then by Memory. One browser tab, a stuck updater, or an antivirus scan pinned at 90% explains a lot of "slow computers."
3. Free up disk space
A drive that is more than about 90% full slows everything down. Empty the Downloads folder, empty the trash, and uninstall programs you have not opened this year.
4. Trim the startup list
In Task Manager's Startup tab (or System Settings > Login Items on a Mac), disable everything you do not recognize as essential. Each item there makes booting and everyday use slower.
5. Scan for malware
Unwanted software mining or spying in the background is a classic cause. Run a full scan with Windows Security or a reputable scanner — not a random "PC cleaner" ad, which is often the problem itself.
6. Check for a failing hard drive
If the machine is slow AND you hear clicking, see files disappearing, or get freezes measured in minutes: stop and back up your files now. Older spinning drives fail slowly, then all at once.
7. The honest hardware question
A machine with 4GB of RAM or an old spinning hard drive can be transformed for far less than the cost of a new computer — an SSD upgrade is the single biggest speed fix that exists.
