Two versions of the same complaint land on a technician's bench every week. Either the battery that used to carry you through a flight now gives up by lunch, or the charger is plugged in, the light is on, and the percentage refuses to move. Both feel like the laptop is on its way out. Usually it isn't — most of the causes below cost nothing to fix, and the one that does cost money costs far less than a new machine.
Before you change a single setting, get the facts. Your laptop keeps a detailed record of exactly how healthy its battery is. Almost nobody reads it.
Read the battery report before you guess
On Windows: right-click the Start button, open Terminal or Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter. Windows writes an HTML report and prints the file path in the window. Open it and find two numbers: Design Capacity — what the battery held when new — and Full Charge Capacity — what it holds now. If full charge is 60% of design, your battery does 60% of the work it used to. That's arithmetic, not a mystery, and it tells you immediately whether you're hunting a software problem or an aging pack.
On a Mac: System Settings > Battery shows Battery Health at the top. For the detail, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Power — you'll see the cycle count and the battery's condition.
Why it drains fast — check these in order
- Screen brightness. The display is the single biggest power draw in most laptops. Dropping brightness a few notches buys back more runtime than any other one change, and your eyes stop noticing the difference within minutes.
- Background apps. Open Task Manager on Windows, or Activity Monitor's Energy tab on a Mac, and sort by power use. Cloud-sync clients, game launchers and update services all sip away while you work. A machine crowded with these usually runs slow too — that has its own guide.
- Browser tabs. Every open tab is a small running program, and a tab playing video or animated ads is not small. Close what you're not reading, or turn on your browser's sleeping-tabs feature and let it do the closing for you.
- The power plan. Windows set to Best performance keeps the processor eager all day whether you need it or not. Settings > System > Power & battery, switch to Balanced on battery. Macs manage this themselves, but check that Low Power Mode is available for travel days.
- Heat. A hot laptop drains faster and ages its cells faster, so a clogged fan is a battery problem wearing a disguise. If the fan is always loud, work through the overheating guide — the two problems usually leave together.
- The cells are simply old. Batteries are consumables, like tires. Most Windows laptop packs are rated to fall to about 80% of their original capacity somewhere around 300–500 charge cycles (the long-standing convention, still quoted in battery guides as of August 2026); Apple designs modern Mac notebook batteries to hold 80% at 1,000 cycles. Your battery report shows your count. A four-year-old battery delivering half its original runtime isn't broken — it's finished, and no setting will unfinish it.
Not charging — climb this ladder
- The charger and cable. Try a different wall outlet first; it's free and takes ten seconds. Then inspect both ends of the cable for fraying or bent pins. If you charge over USB-C, wattage matters — a phone charger can lose ground to a working laptop, draining it slower rather than charging it. Use the wattage your laptop shipped with, or higher.
- The port. Pocket lint and desk debris compact into USB-C and barrel ports until the plug can't seat. Power off, then clear the port gently with a wooden toothpick — never a metal pin. If charging only works with the plug held at an angle, the port itself is damaged, and that's a repair, not a habit to build.
- The 80% limit you forgot you enabled. Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, Dell Power Manager, Surface's smart charging and the Mac's optimized battery charging can all hold the battery near 80% to slow its aging. A laptop stuck at 80% is nearly always this — a setting enabled in a diligent moment and forgotten by the weekend. Check the maker's app before you diagnose a fault.
- The battery driver, on Windows. In Device Manager, expand Batteries, uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and restart. Windows reinstalls it clean on boot. This fixes a surprising share of plugged-in-not-charging cases, because the fault was bookkeeping, not hardware.
- Still stuck. If a known-good charger through a clean port won't move the number, the fault is the battery itself or the charging circuit on the motherboard. A swollen battery means stop now
If the trackpad has started clicking strangely, the case no longer sits flat on the desk, or a seam is opening, the battery may be swelling. Failing lithium cells produce gas, and the sealed pack inflates. This is the one situation where the advice is not to work through a list.
Stop using the machine, unplug it, and keep it somewhere cool. Don't press on the bulge and don't puncture it — swollen packs rarely ignite on their own, but they can if crushed or pierced. Never put one in household trash; electronics and hardware stores with battery recycling bins take them. Get it replaced before the laptop goes back into service — this week, not this quarter.
What a replacement costs, honestly
Nearly every laptop made in the last decade has an internal battery — some behind a dozen screws, some glued beneath other components. As of 2026, repair-cost guides put an OEM replacement pack at roughly $50–$150 for the part, third-party cells at around $20–$60, and a shop job with labor commonly somewhere between $60 and $250 depending on the machine. Two things those ranges hide:
- OEM versus third-party cells. Cheap third-party packs vary wildly, and their capacity claims tend toward optimism. The battery is the one component where a genuine or reputable-brand part earns its premium — it sits millimeters from everything else in the case, and it's the part that swells when it fails.
- The worth-it test. Weigh the price against the machine, not the part. A new battery in an otherwise quick three-year-old laptop is one of the best repairs in computing. For a technician who has done your model before, most swaps are a 30-minute job: the right part ordered in advance, the right screwdriver, no snapped clips. Glued-in packs and recent MacBooks take longer and punish improvisation — those are the ones worth handing off.
