Laptop Running Hot and the Fan Won’t Stop

A hot laptop is not just unpleasant. Sustained heat shortens the life of the battery and the components around it, and modern machines quietly slow themselves down to cope — so an overheating laptop and a slow laptop are frequently the same machine.

First, is it the machine or one program?

Before opening anything, check what is actually running. Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows, or Activity Monitor on a Mac. Sort by CPU.

  • One process at 90–100% — that is your answer. Often a browser tab, a stalled update, or a sync client working through a backlog.
  • Everything modest but the fan is roaring — that points at airflow, which usually means dust.

Dust

Dust buildup causes something like 70% of overheating problems. Laptops pull air through small intake vents, usually underneath, and after a year or two of use on sofas, beds and carpet those vents clog. The fan then runs constantly and moves very little air.

Compressed air at the vents helps a little. It also tends to push dust further in. A proper clean means opening the machine, and on many modern laptops that is more delicate than it looks — ribbon cables and glued batteries do not forgive enthusiasm.

Things that genuinely help

  • Hard flat surface. Beds, cushions and laps block the intakes completely. This is the single most common cause and the easiest fix.
  • Check what launches at startup and remove what you do not need.
  • Keep it out of direct sun and off surfaces that hold heat.
  • A cooling pad helps a genuinely dusty machine less than cleaning it does, but it does help.

When it is not dust

If it is clean and still running hot, the thermal paste between the processor and its heatsink has probably dried out — normal after three or four years. Replacing it is routine work for a technician and makes a dramatic difference. A fan making a grinding or rattling noise is failing mechanically and should be replaced before it stops entirely.

Shutting down on its own under load means it is already hitting emergency temperatures. Stop using it for heavy work until it is looked at.
