You plug the monitor in, the cable clicks home, and nothing happens. The new screen sits there reporting "No signal" — or shows nothing at all — while your desktop carries on across one display as if the second one were never invited.
The fix is usually five minutes once you check things in the right order. That order starts with the cable, because the cable is guilty until proven innocent.
Start with the cable and the port
Video cables fail more often than anything else in this chain, and they fail silently — no error message, just a black screen.
- Reseat both ends. Unplug the cable at the monitor and at the computer, then push each end firmly home. A connector that is nine-tenths in delivers none of the picture.
- Swap the cable. Borrow the HDMI lead from the back of your TV if you have to. A known-good cable rules out the most common failure in one move.
- Try a different port. If the computer has two HDMI outputs, or an HDMI and a DisplayPort, move over. Ports die individually; the rest of the graphics card usually keeps working.
Cable versions only matter at the edges. Any HDMI cable ever made carries 1080p. Driving a 4K monitor at 60Hz needs HDMI 2.0 or newer — an old HDMI 1.4 lead caps you at a juddery 30Hz or shows nothing. DisplayPort cables from the last decade handle 4K without complaint. For an ordinary 1080p or 1440p screen, the cheap cable carries exactly the same digital signal as the gold-plated one.
Check the monitor's input source
Everyone does this one eventually, so let's clear it without embarrassment. Monitors have several inputs — HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort — and plenty of them do not switch to the live socket on their own. Press the menu button on the monitor (usually tucked under the bottom-right corner), find Input or Source, and pick the port your cable is actually plugged into. A monitor that last lived with a games console is still sitting there, listening politely to an empty socket.
Make Windows go looking
- Press Windows key + P and choose Extend. If the mode is set to "PC screen only", Windows is deliberately ignoring the second monitor — which looks exactly like failing to detect it.
- Right-click the desktop, open Display settings, scroll to Multiple displays and click Detect.
- Still nothing? Restart the computer with the monitor connected and switched on. Detection is far more reliable at boot than mid-session, and a restart clears whatever the graphics driver had convinced itself of.
On a Mac
Open System Settings, then Displays. If the external screen isn't listed, hold down the Option key and a Detect Displays button appears — click it. Once the monitor shows up, drag the display thumbnails so their arrangement matches your desk; a screen that is detected but arranged on the wrong side feels broken when the mouse can't find it.
The laptop key that switches displays
Most laptops have a function key that cycles display modes — look along the top row for a key printed with two little rectangles, commonly F4, F5 or F8, pressed alone or with Fn. It steps through the same modes as Windows+P: laptop only, duplicate, extend, external only. One accidental press of this key last Tuesday is a very common reason a monitor that always worked has stopped.
Docking stations and USB-C — the modern culprit
If the monitor connects through USB-C or a dock, suspect that link before anything else. Three honest facts about USB-C video:
- Not every USB-C port carries video. The port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt — look for a DisplayPort or lightning-bolt symbol beside it, or check the spec sheet. A bare USB-C port charges and moves files but will never light a monitor.
- Docks have a bandwidth budget. Two monitors, Ethernet and your webcam all share one cable back to the laptop. Ask a modest dock for two 4K screens at 60Hz and one may simply not appear. Dropping to 30Hz or 1440p is a legitimate test, not a defeat.
- DisplayLink docks need their driver. Docks that squeeze extra displays over plain USB do it in software. No driver — or one broken by a Windows update — means no picture. Install it fresh from the dock maker's site.
The decisive test: plug the monitor straight into the computer with no dock in the way. Works direct but not through the dock? The dock, its driver or its power supply is your culprit — and yes, docks want their own power brick plugged in.
Update the graphics driver, safely
If the hardware checks out, the driver is next. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics card and choose Update driver. Better still, get it from the source — NVIDIA, AMD and Intel each publish a free tool that fetches the current release. Skip third-party "driver updater" utilities entirely; they range from pointless to actively harmful. If the monitor vanished right after a driver update, the same Device Manager screen has a Roll Back Driver button, and it exists for precisely this moment. An old graphics driver rarely drags the whole machine down, by the way — if the computer is slow generally, that's a different checklist.
Detected, but black or flickering
A monitor that appears in Display settings but shows a black screen, an "input not supported" message, or a picture that cuts out every few seconds usually has a resolution or refresh-rate mismatch. Select the second monitor in Display settings, set the resolution marked (Recommended), and under advanced display settings set the refresh rate to 60Hz. A flash of picture followed by black is the signature: the monitor received a signal it can't hold onto.
A word on adapters
Adapters come in two kinds, and the label matters. A passive adapter just rewires the plug and works only where the graphics card already speaks the destination language — DisplayPort out to HDMI in is normally fine. An active adapter converts the signal electronically and is required going the other way, for anything involving VGA, and for running several monitors off one DisplayPort socket. A cheap passive adapter pointed in the wrong direction fails silently — no error, no picture — so if an adapter sits anywhere in your chain, check which kind it is before blaming anything else.
When it's the hardware
Two tests settle it. Plug the monitor into a different computer — anything with HDMI. If it stays dark there too, the monitor has died, and at typical monitor prices a repair rarely beats replacement. Then point your computer at a different screen, even the living-room TV. If it can't light any screen through any port, the graphics card or its ports are failing — a repair job, and on a laptop a professional one. And if the computer shows nothing on its own screen either, you're in different territory: start at computer won't turn on.
