"Printer offline" is the most-searched tech complaint in existence, and the message itself tells you nothing. The actual cause is usually one of these five.
1. The unglamorous basics
Is the printer on, with no error blinking? Same Wi-Fi network as your computer? (Printers love to hop onto a guest network after a power blip.) Turn the printer off, count to ten, turn it on.
2. Restart the thing that talks to it
Restart your computer too. Half of "offline" cases are the computer's print system wedged, not the printer.
3. Clear the stuck queue
One jammed document blocks everything behind it forever. On Windows: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers, open the queue, cancel everything. On a Mac: the printer's queue window, delete all jobs. Then print a test page.
4. The IP address moved
Routers occasionally hand the printer a new address, and the computer keeps calling the old one. Easiest fix for home users: remove the printer in settings and add it again — it will be found at its new address.
5. Drivers, the last resort
If it is still offline, download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site (HP, Canon, Brother, Epson — go to the real site, not an ad). Uninstall the old one first.
