The movie stutters at the exact moment you care about. Pages that should snap open load in pieces. Someone in the house announces the internet is down again — except it isn't down, it's crawling, which is somehow more annoying.
Before you settle in with your provider's hold music, spend twenty minutes finding out where the slowness actually lives. Most of the time it isn't the line coming into the house. It's what happens to the signal after it arrives.
Run a speed test that actually means something
A speed test run from the couch measures your Wi-Fi at the couch, not your internet service. To test the service, take the wireless out of it: plug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable and test there. No Ethernet port? Stand next to the router.
Close everything else first — a cloud backup quietly uploading photos will eat your result. Test three times at different hours; a line that flies at 10 a.m. but sags at 8 p.m. is telling you about evening congestion.
Then compare against what your plan promises — "up to" is doing heavy lifting on the bill, and Wi-Fi always delivers less than the wire. Check the upload number too: on many home plans it's a small fraction of the download, and it's the half video calls lean on.
Wi-Fi problem or internet problem — settle this first

The router: placement, age and the reboot ritual
Routers get hidden — in cabinets, behind televisions, in the closet under the stairs. Radio hates all of it. The router wants to be central, up on a shelf, in the open; every wall costs signal, and a metal cabinet is practically a safe.
The reboot ritual, in the right order:
- Unplug both the modem and the router, and wait thirty seconds.
- Power the modem first and wait until its lights settle.
- Then power the router and give it two minutes.
It clears the router's memory and forces a fresh connection, and it genuinely fixes a lot. But rebooting weekly to stay usable is a symptom, not maintenance.
Age matters too. An old router speaks an older Wi-Fi standard, and every device slows down to talk to it. If your router predates your smart TV, suspect the router.
Bands, channels and why the kitchen is fine
Modern routers broadcast on two bands. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther and pushes through walls better, but it's slow and crowded — your neighbors' networks, baby monitors and the microwave all live there. The 5 GHz band is much faster but fades with distance. Most routers put both under one network name and let each device choose, and devices choose badly: a phone will cling to a faint signal from two rooms away rather than switch.
Apartment buildings add channel congestion — dozens of networks shouting over the same few channels. Routers pick a channel at start-up — one more thing the reboot ritual quietly fixes.
The arithmetic of too many devices
Your connection is one pipe and every device drinks from it. A 4K stream is heavy, a game console pulling an update takes everything it's offered, and a phone backing up two thousand vacation photos can flatten a connection for an hour without mentioning it.
The check is simple: pause the suspects and re-run the test. Many routers show usage per device in their app, which turns the hunt into a list sorted by guilt.
When only one device is slow
If the internet crawls on your laptop while everyone else streams happily, the network is innocent. Confirm on another device in the same chair, then look at the machine itself:
- Updates or a backup downloading in the background.
- A browser carrying forty tabs and a dozen extensions.
- A VPN routing your traffic across the country.
- Malware — worth ruling out if the slowness came on suddenly.
- An old Wi-Fi card that can't keep up with a modern router.

Read the modem before you call
The modem's lights are your provider's side of the story. Power and online (or downstream and upstream) should be solid. A light that blinks forever means the modem can't sync with the network — a line problem, not a Wi-Fi one. All solid but slow points at the plan or congestion instead.
While you're back there, check the coax fitting is finger-tight: every splitter weakens the signal, and a corroded ten-year-old splitter behind the TV has ruined many evenings. If things worsen in the rain, write down the dates — intermittent line faults are real, and evidence gets them fixed.
When it really is the provider — and how to win the call
You're ready to call when the story is: wired to the router, several tests, different days, consistently well below the plan. Lead with that. Ask for a line test from their end, and ask what plan they'd sell you today — providers often give newer customers more speed for the same money. If they offer a technician visit, take it. Mesh — the fix for a house-shaped problem
Some houses can't be covered from one point. Long single-story layouts, three floors, plaster walls, a brick chimney between the router and the bedroom — no single router wins these. A mesh system uses several small nodes sharing one network name, handing devices off as you move.
Two things separate a good mesh install from a disappointing one. Place nodes where the signal is still decent, not in the dead zone — a weak link to the parent only rebroadcasts weakness. And wire nodes together where you can; wired backhaul is the difference between mesh working well and merely existing. Cheap plug-in extenders typically halve throughput and create a second network your devices wander onto at the wrong moment.
