The internet line dies at 12:40 on a Saturday. The card terminal spins, then times out. The first customer taps again and waits. The second one looks at the queue, does the math and leaves. Whether you run a restaurant, a salon, a shop or an office, the moment the connection dropped you stopped being able to take money or answer the phone.
That is what an outage means now. Not slow email — card payments, cloud POS, VoIP phones and the booking system, all gone at once, for however long your provider's recorded message keeps promising a fix. A backup internet connection with automatic failover turns that afternoon into a non-event.
What actually goes down when the line does
Be precise about the damage, because it decides what the backup has to carry.
- Card payments. Most terminals now run over the internet, not a phone line. No connection, no transactions — our guide to a POS or card reader going down covers the fast triage.
- Phones. If you have moved your business to VoIP, your phone service is your internet connection. Callers hear ringing into nothing and conclude you are closed.
- The operational cloud. The POS back end, the appointment book, the ticket system, online orders arriving on a tablet that can no longer hear them.
Notice what is missing from that list: streaming, video, the kitchen radio app. That matters when we size the backup.
The three realistic backup options
A second wired line from a different carrier
The strongest option — cable backing up fiber, or fiber backing up cable — and the only one that gives you full speed during an outage. Two cautions. First, confirm the two lines genuinely take different physical paths: a “different” provider that resells the same underlying network dies at the same moment as your primary, so ask each carrier whose infrastructure the service rides on. Second, this is the expensive route — you pay full price every month for a line you hope never to use. It earns its keep where an hour of downtime costs serious money, not where it costs irritation.
5G or LTE failover
The workhorse choice for most small businesses. A cellular modem — built into the router or a small box beside it — holds a SIM card, and your traffic moves onto the mobile network when the wired line dies. You pay a small standby fee and for the data you actually use. Two cautions: check reception where the router actually lives, because a metal rack in a back room is a Faraday cage with shelves, and buy a data plan intended for routers rather than repurposing a phone plan the carrier may throttle or cancel.
Starlink, when the cell coverage is as bad as the wiring
For rural businesses where “second wired line” means no and the cell signal lives in the parking lot, satellite is the realistic fallback. As of September 2026, Starlink sells business-grade Priority service plans with priority data. The dish needs a clear view of the sky and a monthly fee whether you use it or not — but it is independent of every wire and tower in your county, which is the entire job description of a backup.
Automatic beats manual, every time
There are two ways to run failover. Manual: a 5G hotspot lives in a drawer, and when the internet dies somebody finds it, powers it on and reconnects the card terminals to its Wi-Fi. Automatic: the router notices the line is down and switches by itself, in seconds, with nobody touching anything.
Manual failover fails at exactly the moment it exists for. The outage comes at 5pm on Friday, when the queue is long, the staff on shift are the newest, and the one person who knows where the hotspot is, what its password is and how to repoint a card terminal left an hour ago. The drawer hotspot is a plan that works with the manager present and at no other time.
Automatic failover works at 5pm on Friday because it does not need anybody. That is the whole argument.
Dual-WAN routers, in plain words
The device that does this is called a dual-WAN router. WAN is the internet side; dual-WAN means the router accepts two internet sources at once — your wired line in one port, the cellular or satellite backup in the other. Every few seconds it checks that the primary can genuinely reach the internet, not merely that the cable has a link light — a line can be up and still dead. When the checks fail, traffic moves to the backup; when the primary recovers and stays stable, traffic moves home on its own.
Two details worth knowing before you buy:
- Phone calls in progress usually drop at the instant of switchover, then the phones re-register on the backup within a minute or so. A dropped call you can redial is a different universe from a dead phone system.
- This is a feature, not necessarily a new device. Plenty of business-grade routers already have a second WAN port or a USB modem slot doing nothing. Size the backup for payments and phones, not Netflix
Here is the pleasant surprise: the traffic that keeps you in business is tiny. A card transaction is a few kilobytes. A VoIP call uses roughly 100 Kbps in each direction. The payments, calls and cloud POS of an entire shop fit comfortably into a connection a fraction the size of your main line.
So do not size the backup for a normal day — size it for a survivable one. Configure the router so that on failover the essential traffic passes (payments, phones, POS) and the greedy traffic waits (streaming, cloud backup jobs, system updates, the guest Wi-Fi). Most dual-WAN routers can do this with priority rules. A modest data plan then covers you, and the outage does not arrive with a surprise data bill three weeks later.
Test it quarterly, on purpose
An untested backup is a rumor. Every three months, at a quiet hour, run the same four steps:
- Unplug the primary internet cable from the router. Not the power lead — the WAN cable. You are simulating the real failure, not a reboot.
- Time the switchover. Seconds is good; minutes means the health-check settings need attention.
- Run a real card transaction and make a real phone call while on the backup — those two are the point.
- Plug the primary back in and confirm traffic fails back on its own.
Quarterly tests catch the quiet failures: a SIM plan cancelled for inactivity, an antenna knocked behind a shelf, a firmware update that reset the failover rules. Fifteen minutes, four times a year.
