When QuickBooks will not open, the fear is not the program — it is your books inside it. Good news: the company file and the program are separate things, and everything below is safe to try without risking your data.
1. Reboot first, and mind the updates
QuickBooks often fails to start right after a Windows update or its own update half-finished. Restart the computer fully and try again before anything else.
2. Is it QuickBooks, or the company file?
Hold the Ctrl key while double-clicking the QuickBooks icon and keep holding until it opens. This starts the program WITHOUT loading your company file. If it opens this way, the program is fine — the problem is the file or the path to it (very common when the file lives on another computer or a server).
3. The Tool Hub is the official fix-it kit
Intuit ships a free "QuickBooks Tool Hub" with a Quick Fix My Program button that repairs the most common startup failures. Download it from Intuit's own site only.
4. Multi-user offices: check the host
If QuickBooks works on one computer but not others, the machine that hosts the company file is the suspect — its Database Server Manager service has likely stopped. This is the classic "it broke after the office PC updated overnight" scenario.
What NOT to do
Do not reinstall QuickBooks in a panic, and never delete files you do not recognize near your company file — the .TLG file next to it is part of your safety net. And if you have no recent backup, make copying that company file your very next act.
